Questions about OpenMETRIC's Database Administrator Functions

4.   Database Administrator Functions

4.1

Do you recommend a dedicated systems administrator to support your system?

A “dedicated” systems administrator is typically not required for OpenMETRIC.

However, if the OpenMETRIC database resides on an RDBMS, such as Oracle or SQL Server, then we insist that a Database Administrator be available to support the application on an as required basis.

There are several functions which are typically reserved to a senior person, but these are usually handled by a clerk or a senior technician.  This role is usually identified as an “Application Administrator.”  The AA manages the Gate Master, the Electronic Signatures, the Reference table, the Global functions, and the batch functions.

Installation of new releases and other administration of the server, clients, and network is typically performed on an as required basis by a Systems Administrator or a Network Administrator.

4.2

Can a Main Menu option be hidden from a user?

In OpenMETRIC, our philosophy is to ensure that every user sees the same things on every screen.  In a system as sophisticated and complex as OpenMETRIC, this dramatically reduces training and support problems and resource requirements.

Functions which the user is not authorized to perform are typically “grayed out” rather than “hidden.”

4.3

Can unused fields be removed from a screen?

In keeping with our philosophy as explained in # 4.2 above, we do not support the removal of fields from a screen.

4.4

How is data archived?

Because of the extremely long historical value of calibration records, we typically recommend that the entire historical database be maintained on-line indefinitely.

If archiving data and removing data from the on-line database is desired or required for practical or for legal reasons, we will work with you to implement appropriate procedures.

4.5

How are user defined fields accommodated?

OpenMETRIC includes 32 user-defined data fields which for which you can specify the name in the Reference table.  These data fields can be accessed, read, and/or written, depending on the security authorization of the user.

4.6

Can selectable default data be defined for fields to eliminate accidental misspellings of equipment information during new add? What is the maximum number of pre-defined selectable data (List Boxes)?

Virtually every data field in OpenMETRIC is supported by default or validation data stored elsewhere in OpenMETRIC, typically in one of the Setup subsystems.  Data is typically filled in automatically or selected from Paged List Boxes to ensure accuracy, consistency, and “normalization” of the OpenMETRIC data.

There are no predefined limits to the sizes of the PLB’s.

4.7

How is the customer contact database managed? Can the system permit an unlimited number of contacts to be defined for each customer? How is this interfaced with recall reporting?

Yes, OpenMETRIC does permit an unlimited number of Contacts to be defined for each Customer.  For each Contact, OpenMETRIC permits the definition of an email address which is used for generating email notes and reports.
